Bicyclist in Redding Dies after an Accident with a Pickup Truck

Last month, tragedy struck when the driver of a pickup truck collided with a bicyclist in the crosswalk of a Redding intersection. The incident occurred just before 8:30 on the morning of August 11th near the intersection of Boulder Drive and Lake Boulevard. Witnesses to the accident say that the driver of the pickup truck, identified as 36-year-old Melissa Johnson, hit the cyclist as she ran a red light. The cyclist, identified as Kim Bradley Pyles, age 58, was rushed to Mercy Medical Center where he died from his wounds. Officials have noted that alcohol or drugs did not play a role in the accident. Pyles was also reported to have not been wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

Accidents such as this one highlight the increased dangers bicyclists face while on the road. No matter how closely a rider follows the law, if a cyclist is on the street then they are at risk. While there are laws and regulations in California set in place to protect bicyclists from these dangers, many accidents occur because drivers are simply not looking for cyclists. For example, the law stating that a driver must keep at least three feet between their vehicle and a cyclist will offer little protection if a motorist never sees a rider. The unfortunate reality is that when the negligent actions of a driver do lead to a collision, cyclists are at a greater risk for injury or death than drivers of other motor vehicles.
